Currently, Dr. Johnson is Senior Consultant-REE/USDA, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Iowa State University, and Assistant to the Dean, University of Nevada, Reno.

Beginning in 1996, he held the position of Vice Provost for University Extension at Iowa State University, and in this capacity, he was responsible for close to a $60 million budget and for faculty and staff numbering more that 1,250.  He also is a Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Agriculture, a Fellow of the American Agricultural Economics Association, a member of the Former Soviet Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and several other international university affiliations.  For his dedicated international service, he received the Wilton Park International Service Award and the International Honor Award from the Office of International Cooperation and Development, USDA.

Dr. Johnson’s first academic position was at the University of Missouri.  He spent most of his academic career there, but in 1985, he moved to Iowa State to become Director of the highly recognized Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD).  Under his leadership, CARD became even more visible internationally with significant projects conducted around the world.  He has been visiting professor at the Universities of California at Davis and Berkeley and has had sabbatical visits at Purdue and Georgia.

Prior to his assignments as a full-time administrator, Dr. Johnson made distinguished professional contributions in the areas of econometric methods and modeling, demand and consumption analysis, and agricultural policy analysis.  His work on demand systems analysis was important in stimulating the attention of professionals in the use of modern analytical research techniques in this area.  The quantitative agricultural policy analysis produced by CARD and FAPRI has been influential in previous Farm Bills.  He often made special presentations to Congress and served on university review teams.

Stanley R. Johnson has received numerous professional awards and prizes for his research.  He has lived up to the Iowa State Extension slogan “Helping you become your best.”  During his career, he has served as mentor and faculty advisor to over 100 graduate students with many of his former students having gone on to successful careers as research economists.  He has authored or co-authored three books, more than ninety journal articles, and more than seventy other publications.
