Loc McNew was born and raised near Navasota, Texas. He grew up working on his family’s commercial cow-calf operation in southern Brazos County. He graduated high school in 1982 and went to Blinn College in Brenham for a couple years before quitting school to go to work. He worked in automotive services and restaurants for a year before returning to school in 1985 at Texas A&M University. He graduated with a double major in marketing and management in 1987 and completed The Land Economics and Real Estate (LERE) Program in 1988. While completing The LERE program, Loc was a TA for Doc Schmedemann and he held multiple jobs throughout his college career in order to pay his tuition and other bills.
Once graduated, Loc went to work as an analyst at the Texas Department of Commerce. He remained with the Department of Commerce in Austin until 1989, working with anything and everything related to business development and economic development legislation. Next, he went to work in the commercial real estate group for American General, a life insurance company headquartered in Houston. He was promoted to Regional Manager of Real Estate Loan Origination in 1994. In 1996, he moved within American General to the Fixed Income and Private Equity department where he started working with business lending and also became the Senior Investment Manager; in 1998, he was promoted to Vice President. American General was acquired by American International Group (AIG) in 2001, and Loc remained in the same position working for AIG. In 2001, he was promoted to Managing Director. In 2007, he was promoted to Senior Managing Director and Global Head of Private Placements. Beginning with the 2008 AIG bailout, Loc commuted to New York weekly to assist the company with asset dispositions. He was on AIG’s frontlines, fully repaying its taxpayer bailout in December 2012 accompanied by $22 billion in interest. Loc left AIG in 2013 to work for MetroNational, a family-owned, Houston-based, real estate investment, development, and management company with real estate assets worth more than $1 billion.
As President and COO of MetroNational, Loc has a key role in the day-to-day operations, growth, and future plans of the company. He recognizes that, as the company and Memorial City area grows, the community will need more of everything, from places to live and work to places to shop and stay. Memorial City is a great location in the Houston area and Loc is poised to fully take advantage of that. MetroNational owns more than 8.5 million square feet of commercial real estate in Houston, including Memorial City Mall, the Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital Campus, Class A office buildings, the Westin Memorial City, and luxury apartments. As MetroNational continues to develop Memorial City, Loc closely evaluates market supply and demand conditions as well as the competitive landscape throughout his work in order to maintain his company’s success and growth.
Loc is a member of the Houston Community College Northwest Entrepreneurship and Economic Development Consortium and the Spring Branch Business and Community Steering Committee. He is also a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers and the Houston Realty Business Coalition. He was a frequent guest lecturer at Texas A&M for Dr. Etter and Dr. Schmedemann.
